Following the successful launch of Spotify’s AI-powered DJ feature and, more recently, added support for AI-translated podcasts, Spotify now appears to be developing one other technique of using AI in its app: AI-powered playlists. The additions were uncovered by tech veteran-turned-investor Chris Messina, who posted screenshots of code in Spotify’s app that consult with “AI playlists” and “playlists based in your prompts.” He theorized that creating these could also be an option inside the Mix genre, where the tastes of various users are mixed to create a playlist with songs that everybody likes.

Reached for comment, Spotify declined to substantiate its plans around AI playlists.

“At Spotify, we’re continually iterating and ideating to enhance our product offering and offer value to users. But we don’t comment on speculation around possible latest features and don’t have anything latest to share right now,” a spokesperson told TechCrunch.

That said, Spotify can have already been laying the groundwork for AI playlists created with prompts when it developed a feature called Area of interest mixes, which today allows users to construct unique playlists based on an outline alone. These Area of interest mixes currently allow you to specify almost anything to create a playlist — from a genre to a vibe or an aesthetic, like Cottagecore Indie Mix, Bubblegum Pop Mix, Discofox Mix, Feel Good Driving Mix, Fun Road Trip Mix, Travel Mashup Mix and others.

Nevertheless, Spotify told us when the Area of interest Mixes were launched back in March that they weren’t AI-powered, despite their initial appearance. As an alternative, Spotify said the mixes were driven by the corporate’s personalization tech and algorithms.

Messina tells TechCrunch his latest findings indicate the brand new AI playlists can be built using prompts, as well, but he hasn’t yet uncovered the feature in the general public app, only within the code.
