Sam Altman returns as CEO, OpenAI has a recent initial board

I’m returning to OpenAI as CEO. Mira will return to her role as CTO. The brand new initial board will consist of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.

I even have never been more excited concerning the future. I’m extremely grateful for everybody’s exertions in an unclear and unprecedented situation, and I think our resilience and spirit set us apart within the industry. I feel so, so good about our probability of success for achieving our mission.

Before attending to what comes next, I’d wish to share some thanks.

I like and respect Ilya, I believe he’s a guiding light of the sector and a gem of a human being. I harbor zero sick will towards him. While Ilya will now not serve on the board, we hope to proceed our working relationship and are discussing how he can proceed his work at OpenAI.

I’m grateful to Adam, Tasha, and Helen for working with us to return to this solution that best serves the mission. I’m excited to proceed to work with Adam and am sincerely thankful to Helen and Tasha for investing an enormous amount of effort on this process.

Thank you furthermore may to Emmett who had a key and constructive role in helping us reach this consequence. Emmett’s dedication to AI safety and balancing stakeholders’ interests was clear.

Mira did a tremendous job throughout all of this, serving the mission, the team, and the corporate selflessly throughout. She is an incredible leader and OpenAI wouldn’t be OpenAI without her. Thanks.

Greg and I are partners in running this company. We now have never quite discovered the best way to communicate that on the org chart, but we are going to. Within the meantime, I just desired to make it clear. Thanks for the whole lot you may have done because the very starting, and for a way you handled things from the moment this began and during the last week.

The leadership team–Mira, Brad, Jason, Che, Hannah, Diane, Anna, Bob, Srinivas, Matt, Lilian, Miles, Jan, Wojciech, John, Jonathan, Pat, and plenty of more–is clearly able to run the corporate without me. They are saying one solution to evaluate a CEO is how you choose and train your potential successors; on that metric I’m doing much better than I spotted. It’s clear to me that the corporate is in great hands, and I hope that is abundantly clear to everyone. Thanks all.

Jakub, Szymon, and Aleksander are exceptional talents and I’m so joyful they’ve rejoined to maneuver us and our research forward. Thanks.

To all of you, our team: I’m sure books are going to be written about this time period, and I hope the very first thing they are saying is how amazing your entire team has been. Now that we’re through all of this, we didn’t lose a single worker. You stood firm for one another, this company, and our mission. One of the vital vital things for the team that builds AGI safely is the flexibility to handle stressful and unsure situations, and maintain logic throughout. Top marks. Thanks all.

Satya, Kevin, Amy, and Brad have been incredible partners throughout this, with exactly the appropriate priorities during. They’ve had our backs and were able to welcome all of us if we couldn’t achieve our primary goal. We clearly made the appropriate alternative to partner with Microsoft and I’m excited that our recent board will include them as a non-voting observer. Thanks.

To our partners and users, thanks for sticking with us. We actually felt the outpouring of support and love, and it helped all of us get through this. The indisputable fact that we didn’t lose a single customer will drive us to work even harder for you, and we’re all excited to get back to work.

Will Hurd, Brian Chesky, Bret Taylor and Larry Summers put their lives on hold and did an incredible amount to support the mission. I don’t know the way they did it so well, but they really did. Thanks.

Ollie also put his life on hold this complete time to only do the whole lot he could to assist out, along with providing his usual unconditional love and support. Thanks and I like you.

So what’s next?

We now have three immediate priorities.

Advancing our research plan and further investing in our full-stack safety efforts, which have at all times been critical to our work. Our research roadmap is obvious; this was a splendidly focusing time. I share the thrill you all feel; we are going to turn this crisis into a possibility! I’ll work with Mira on this.

Continuing to enhance and deploy our products and serve our customers. It’s vital that folks get to experience the advantages and promise of AI, and have the chance to shape it. We proceed to consider that great products are the perfect solution to do that. I’ll work with Brad, Jason and Anna to make sure our unwavering commitment to users, customers, partners and governments all over the world is obvious.

Bret, Larry, and Adam might be working very hard on the extremely vital task of constructing out a board of diverse perspectives, improving our governance structure and overseeing an independent review of recent events. I look ahead to working closely with them on these crucial steps so everyone might be confident in the steadiness of OpenAI.

I’m so looking forward to ending the job of constructing helpful AGI with you all—best team on this planet, best mission on this planet.

Love,

Sam
