OpenAI has did not register a trademark that restricts the usage of the word ‘GPT’. Nevertheless, it’s analyzed that the potential of being registered will increase with time.

TechCrunch reported on the twenty fourth (local time) that OpenAI’s application for registration of the GPT trademark with the USA Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) at the tip of last yr was recently rejected.

OpenAI applied for trademark rights for GPT to the Korean Mental Property Office at the tip of last yr, and on the sixteenth of last month, it filed a petition to expedite the trademark registration process, saying, “There are countless infringing and counterfeit apps.”

Nevertheless, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office dismissed the request on the 14th, saying, “The petition fee was omitted, and appropriate documentary evidence supporting the legitimacy of the special measure was not provided.”

In response, OpenAI posted a brand guideline on its website on the twenty fourth, saying, “Please avoid using terms reminiscent of ‘○○○GPT’.” Specific use cases for the usage of GPT terminology were also disclosed.

Meanwhile, Jefferson Cher, chairman of Carr & Ferrell, a comprehensive law firm, said, “GPT stands for ‘Generative Pre-trained Transformer.’ The term itself has a descriptive origin, but IBM (International Business Machines) also “There may be a case of successful trademark registration,” he said. “If GPT secures more users and the popularity that it’s a novel brand of OpenAI grows, it’s more likely to be registered as a trademark.”
