Research results have shown that there may be little risk that enormous language models (LLMs) equivalent to 'GPT-4' will actually help create biological weapons.

Bloomberg reported on the thirty first (local time) that OpenAI disclosed research results showing that an experiment using GPT-4 doesn’t help create biological threats equivalent to producing biological weapons.

The preparation team compared the outcomes of the 2 groups through five indicators, including accuracy, completeness, innovation, time required, and difficulty. They found that GPT-4 didn’t significantly improve participants' performance on any of the measures, except that GPT-4 barely improved accuracy for the scholar group.

Additionally they observed that GPT-4 often produces inaccurate or misleading responses, which could actually hinder the biothreat creation process.

The preparedness team concluded that “current LLMs, equivalent to GPT-4, don’t pose a considerable risk of enabling the creation of biological threats beyond resources distributed on the Web.” In other words, the reason is that LLM doesn’t present a recent method.

Nonetheless, he cautioned that “this finding is just not definitive, and future LLMs may grow to be more competent and riskier.”

It also emphasized the necessity for continued research and community deliberation on this topic, in addition to the event of improved assessment methods and ethical guidelines for AI-based safety risks.
