LG Electronics (CEO Jo Joo-wan) announced on the twenty first that it should work with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Intel, and Microsoft to find on-device AI technology that may lead the factitious intelligence (AI) laptop market.

LG Electronics held a launch ceremony for the 'On-Device AI Challenge' with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Intel Korea, and Microsoft Korea on the Chosun Palace in Gangnam, Seoul.

In attendance were Oh Young-joo, Minister of SMEs and Startups, Jang Ik-hwan, head of LG Electronics' BS business division, Intel Korea CEO Kwon Myeong-sook, and Microsoft Korea CEO Cho Won-woo.

The challenge event was designed to find and support startups with outstanding on-device AI technology. The areas of technology discovered include ▲security solutions ▲entertainment ▲productivity enhancement ▲hardware performance improvement ▲program development.

LG Electronics plans to use Intel processors specialized in AI computing functions to its laptop products this 12 months. We plan to speed up our efforts to secure leadership within the laptop market by installing the on-device AI technology discovered within the challenge into the next-generation ‘LG Gram’.

Chosen startups will receive support for technologies in each field, including devices (LG Electronics), chipsets (Intel), and software (Microsoft), throughout the commercialization verification (PoC) process. PoC costs may also be supported.

Any startup inside 10 years of business with on-device AI and software development capabilities using Intel's OpenVINO toolkit can apply.

On-device AI technology permits you to use AI technology, use real-time interpretation and translation functions, and create pictures, videos, and music without an Web connection.

The reason is that AI will analyze customer usage patterns and improve hardware performance, similar to CPU performance and battery efficiency. On-device AI has the benefits of superior security, fast work speed, and low power consumption in comparison with cloud AI.

You may apply to take part in the event on the K-Startup website until April eleventh.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics announced in February that it might install Upstage's 'Solar' on the LG Gram.

Jang Ik-hwan, head of LG Electronics' BS Business Division, said, “We are going to work with promising startups to find modern on-device AI technologies to be applied to the next-generation 'LG Gram' and supply customers with a differentiated AI experience.”
