Deepfake scams have turned China the other way up. Related social media posts recorded over 100 million views in someday.

Reuters introduced that on the twenty second (local time), a fraudulent incident occurred wherein a friend’s face and voice were created using sophisticated deepfake technology to send money, raising concerns amongst Chinese people.

In line with this, on the twentieth of last month, Mr. Guo, the representative of an IT company in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, transferred 4.3 million yuan (about 800 million won) to the account of a friend who asked for help, saying, “I would like a deposit for bidding.”

The victim, who noticed that it was a scam while checking with a friend to see if the transfer was successful, reported it to the general public security authorities, but just before the checking account was suspended, 931,600 yuan (about 170 million won) had already been withdrawn.

It turned out that the victim didn’t suspect that the face and voice of the friend within the video call were the identical. Public security authorities estimate that the perpetrator used deepfake technology using artificial intelligence (AI).

This incident caused an enormous response through Weibo, China’s largest social media platform. A post with the hashtag “#AI scam is exploding nationwide” garnered greater than 120 million views and generated many comments.

One Weibo user said, “Now photos, voices, and videos are all unreliable,” and “I ponder if the federal government’s regulations will find a way to meet up with the scammers’ technology.”

Meanwhile, China’s National Web Information Office, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and Ministry of Public Security took effect on January tenth of the ‘Web Information Service Deep Synthesis Management Regulations’.

Deep synthesis is a ‘technology that creates or manipulates text, images, videos, and audio using AI’s deep learning or augmented reality’. It’s a rule that it’s mandatory to find a way to trace

Based on this regulation, on the seventh, the Chinese government arrested a suspect for creating fake news using ChatGPT for the primary time. On the time, the general public security agency stated that the fees amounted to a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison, but could possibly be prolonged to 10 years in extreme cases.
