It has been proposed that a flight test system based on a Robot Operating System (ROS) is required to proceed with the secure development of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Chosun University (President Min Young-don) announced that two students, including doctoral student Kim Shin-hyeong of the Department of Smart Vehicle Convergence System Engineering, published a thesis on ‘Development and Verification of ROS-based Multi-DOF Flight Test System for Unmanned Flight Device’ in ‘IEEE Access’. announced on the thirteenth.

This study developed and verified the system using a wind tunnel test device developed by Unmand System (CEO Jeong Seong-hoon).

The researchers stressed that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have to be secure and efficient to perform tasks in a wide range of fields, so robustness and integrity of the UAV system are paramount in design and operation.

Due to this fact, it was explained that the ROS-based operating software easily and quickly applied the control program that meets the varied requirements of the particular UAV operator.

To this end, a dedicated server computer, various sensors, and data collection devices were configured within the electronic control unit (ECU), and it was used to simply connect with an external monitor or tablet PC for control, and to link with the experiment operator’s external system.

Through this, a flight test was conducted in a wind tunnel test device for overall operation, data collection function and software simulation of ROS, control algorithm verification of vertical axis movement device, and the outcomes were derived. It’s self-assessment that it has presented a direction for the event of more stable unmanned aerial vehicles.

Shin-Hyung Kim, the primary creator, said, β€œTo satisfy these design and operational requirements, we proposed a multi-degree-of-freedom (DOF) flight test system based on a robot operating system (ROS). This technique was developed using a wind tunnel test rig. “We are able to perform flight tests near reality by fusing hardware experiments and software simulations with the goal of conducting secure development, verification, and inspection of unmanned aerial vehicles.”

Meanwhile, IEEE Access is an open scientific journal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which is essentially the most influential amongst technology-related organizations. It deals with various papers similar to engineering, computing, and artificial intelligence (AI).
