Let me show you what the information reveals—and the right way to navigate this tension strategically.
Understanding the Three Objectives (And Why They Clash)
Before I show you the strain, let me define what we’re measuring. Consider these as three dials you’ll be able to turn:
Privacy (ε — “epsilon”)

But first, let me explain why small-scale systems struggle. Understanding the issue clarifies why the answer works.
The Small-Scale Tension: Privacy Noise Blinds Fairness
Here’s what happens if you implement privacy and fairness individually at a single institution:
Differential privacy works by injecting calibrated noise into the training process. This noise adds randomness, making it mathematically inconceivable to reverse-engineer individual records from the model.
The issue: This same noise blinds the fairness algorithm.
