Romania appoints AI as government adviser

Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă

The Romanian government has made headlines by appointing a synthetic intelligence (AI) as an advisor.

Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca surprised ministers by introducing an AI named ‘Ion’ as an honorary advisor at a cupboard meeting on the first (local time), Politico reported.

“Ion, an AI developed by Romanian researchers, will quickly and mechanically capture the opinions and requests submitted by the people,” Prime Minister Siuka said.

It allows ideas to be communicated through government-provided web sites and social media accounts, or in person. Ion does in a roundabout way reply to the people.

The Romanian government integrates and analyzes messages from the people using AI functions, and reflects them in state administration. Based on the data received by Ion, it plans to create a report on national priorities.

Experts advise against using these technologies with caution. Chris Shrasak, technical researcher on the Irish Civil Liberties Commission, said, “It’s questionable on what criteria the federal government will accept the prioritization of the messages received by Aeon.”
