National Policy within the Era of Technological Hegemony… Held KAIST Forum

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST, President Lee Kwang-hyung) announced on the twentieth that it held the ‘strategy forum on countermeasures against technological hegemony competition and securing national strategic technology’ on the Alumni Startup Hall in Daejeon.

Hosted by the KAIST Graduate School of Technology Management (President Deok-Hee Lee) and co-hosted by the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (President Ju-Hyeon) and the Science and Technology Policy Institute (President Mi-Okay Moon), this forum was prepared to hunt domestic policy directions and ways to secure national strategic technologies at a time when technological competitiveness has grow to be a vital factor for national survival.

Professor Eui-Seok Kim of KAIST Graduate School of Technology Management, the primary presenter, defined National Critical Technologies that the nation should strategically secure within the age of technology hegemony competition based on the outcomes of analyzing 86,000 related literature.

Next, Kyung Hee-kwon, an associate researcher on the Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade, identified the competitive advantage and threat aspects of Korea’s high-tech strategic industries within the US-China competition for supremacy, and proposed policy measures to breakthrough as a world pivotal country.

Cho Yong-rae, a research fellow on the Science and Technology Policy Institute, introduces foreign policy cases related to competition for technological hegemony and derives implications for Korea to think about. It also presents realistic policy directions suitable for the emerging security era.

The last speaker, Yoon Tae-seong, a professor on the KAIST Graduate School of Technology Management, explained the cause and expansion strategy of technological hegemony competition and suggested countermeasures for Korea’s survival strategy on the policy level.

Afterwards, former KAIST professor Kim Kap-soo conducted the discussion. Gye-hwan Kim, Senior Research Fellow on the Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade, Kyung-mo Kyung, Director of the Research Center for Science, Technology, Diplomacy and Security on the Institute for Science and Technology Policy, and Jung-kyu Park, Adjunct Professor on the Department of Future Automotive Engineering at Hanyang University, along with 4 presenters, participated within the conference to synthesize research results related to technological hegemony competition and discuss what essentially the most effective policy is.

Dean Lee Deok-hee of the KAIST Graduate School of Technology Management, who oversaw the forum, said, “I hope this forum will function a possibility to further specify the direction that Korea’s science technology and industrial policy should move in the brand new geopolitical paradigm triggered by competition for technological hegemony.”
