Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on the seventeenth its goal of accelerating the share of renewable energy power to as much as 50% by 2040.

Japan is the world’s second largest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a significant consumer of oil. Last yr, the proportion of renewable energy generation exceeded 23% and fossil fuels exceeded 60%, so there may be a protracted method to go to realize the goal of converting to renewable energy and achieving carbon neutrality.

Nonetheless, feeling a crisis in energy security after the Ukraine War, the country went one step farther from the prevailing ‘decarbonization’ focused policy and strengthened the policy to ‘strengthening energy security’.

Accordingly, we plan to extend the ratio of renewable energy and clean energy by raising the proportion of renewable energy to as much as 50% by 2040, reducing fossil fuel power plants by as much as 30%, and expanding nuclear power by 20%.

As well as, the goal is to cut back greenhouse gases by 60% by 2035 and by 73% by 2040. The plan is to succeed in carbon neutrality by 2050.

Experts evaluated that “this goal is more realistic than the prevailing 2030 goal.”

This plan is anticipated to be finalized at a cupboard meeting early next yr.

Meanwhile, Tokyo, Japan is considering ways to extend the proportion of renewable energy by mandating the installation of solar panels in latest buildings starting April this yr. Particularly, we plan to rebuild 70% of existing homes by 2050 and install solar panels in all latest buildings.
