You founded Infragistics over 35 years ago, before the web had fully matured. What was the unique inspiration behind creating Infragistics, and the way did you envision its future on the time? 

When other 16-year-olds were buying their cars, I made a decision to purchase an IBM PC to show myself the right way to code. That’s where my passion for programming and technology–and ultimately the inspiration for Infragistics–began.

After college, I worked a two-year stint as a coder on Wall Street and desired to take the leap to construct my very own products. It was then that Infragistics was founded. After we were first starting out, I used to be still working my consulting job in the course of the day and I’d deal with the corporate at night. It wasn’t until we went face to face against Microsoft for a deal–and won–that Infragistics would propel to the forefront of the still nascent web software industry.

As someone who bootstrapped a worldwide tech company, what were the largest challenges you faced within the early years of Infragistics, and the way did you overcome them?

After we won the Microsoft deal, I needed to go from early web coder to business operator seemingly overnight. At that time we had only 10 employees, so I used to be liable for navigating the nuances of scaling an organization, hiring and growing teams and becoming a pacesetter, a manager and a mentor. I believed I used to be showing I cared for workers through structure and goals, but my employees saw it as me being more focused on creating structure than constructing relationships with them.
