KAIST Selects 6 Firms Including MetisX for ‘Innovation and Startup Award’

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST, President Kwang-Hyung Lee) announced on the eleventh the winners of the ‘2024 Korea Innovation and Startup Award’, which discovers excellent examples of deep tech startups.

The Korea Innovation and Startup Award is an award that selects startups with modern technologies, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT and co-sponsored by KAIST, Seoul National University, and Joongang Holdings. The award ceremony was held on the ‘2024 Korea International Symposium on Innovation and Startup Nation’ held at Seoul National University on the eleventh.

Among the many six award-winning corporations, MetisX, a system semiconductor design company developing CXL-based intelligent memory solutions, and Standard Energy, which developed an energy storage system, received the Minister of Science and ICT Award.

The KAIST President’s Award went to Gobiolab, a Seoul National University faculty startup, and the Seoul National University President’s Award went to Perigee Aerospace, which developed an area launch vehicle. The Joongang Holdings Chairman’s Award went to Algenomics, which develops recent drugs using gene editing technology, and the National Research Council of Science and Technology Chairman’s Award went to Mediintech, which helps analyze and diagnose medical images using AI.

On the ‘2024 International Symposium on Innovation and Startup Nation Korea’ held on the identical day, ▲Mohan Iyer, General Partner of world enterprise capital firm SOSV, ▲Chunichi Nakajima, Director of Japanese tech company Digital Garage, and ▲Tomotaka Koji, CEO of University of Tokyo Enterprise Capital (UTEC), which operates a deep-tech specialized fund, gave keynote speeches and offered advice on making a deep-tech startup ecosystem.

As well as, ▲Baek Seung-wook, founder and chairman of Runit ▲Lim Jeong-min, investment director of Signite Partners ▲Jeong Tae-heum, CEO of Adelphi Ventures ▲Oh Jun-ho, founder and CTO of Rainbow Robotics, gave lectures sharing their startup experiences and concepts. A discussion session was also held to debate the roles of enormous corporations and CVCs within the startup ecosystem.

KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung said, “The award-winning corporations were highly regarded for creating recent markets through commercialization of cutting-edge technologies and realizing social values ​​through technological innovation.” He added, “I hope it will function a chance to encourage entrepreneurship, raise awareness of the importance of modern startups, and supply recent challenges and inspiration to technology entrepreneurs, thereby promoting the creation and expansion of a deep-tech startup ecosystem.”
