GIST AI Lab, Grand Piano Competition with AI Composer ‘Lee Bom’

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Lim Ki-chul) announced that it held a ‘Recent Technology Exhibition and Presentation’ on the twentieth at Oryong Hall, hosted by the Artificial Intelligence Research Center (Director Ahn Chang-wook, Professor of AI Graduate School), which showcased research results related to artificial intelligence (AI) together with a piano battle performance.

On the presentation that day, two grand pianos equipped with AI composer ‘EvoM’ recreated the piano battle scene from the Taiwanese film ‘Secret’.

It opened with a performance by artist Peony, referred to as Korea’s first female VR artist. This was followed by a composition and performance competition between two AI pianos, followed by a collaboration between the AI ​​piano and violinist Yoo Su-jin and cellist Kim Seon-ju.

This bom can compose recent songs by understanding music composition theory and genre characteristics through deep learning. It could possibly also recognize human facial expressions by incorporating the newest AI technology, and when the user speaks or inputs, it understands them and immediately creates songs appropriate for the situation.

Director Ahn Chang-wook said, “GIST Artificial Intelligence Research Center has been conducting AI research and development for humans with the philosophy that AI has true value only when it exists for humans.” He added, “Through this exhibition and presentation, we desired to introduce the Artificial Intelligence Research Center’s representative technologies and showcase recent technologies, thereby providing time to think in regards to the future direction wherein humans and AI can coexist.”

Meanwhile, the GIST Artificial Intelligence Research Institute is planning and promoting specific projects with the goal of achieving AI research results, constructing infrastructure, promoting national projects, and promoting industry-academia cooperation. It’s currently specializing in the event of knowledge-data synthesis AI technology and application research that may think and reason like humans even with a small amount of knowledge.
