On the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Lim Ki-cheol), the ‘G-Stracker’ team of the data-based simulation and design laboratory of the Department of Mechanical Engineering won the grand prize within the designated competition category (‘Detection-Identification-Tracking’ mission) of the ‘1st Land, Sea, and Air Unmanned Vehicle Challenge’. It was announced on the twenty third that it was done.

So as to reply to North Korea’s drone infiltration, which has grow to be a national issue at the tip of 2022, the ‘Land, Sea, and Air Unmanned Vehicle Challenge’ hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea focuses on ‘detection-identification-tracking’ and ‘neutralization’ of illegal drones. It’s presented as a mission, and participating teams must perform the mission in automatic flight without pilot intervention using a self-developed unmanned aerial vehicle system.

Within the designated competition category, the duty of ‘continuous detection and identification of illegal drones’ was assigned, and the competition was divided right into a student division and a company division. The G-Stracker team that participated in the coed division advanced to the ultimate round and competed through the primary preliminary round (proposal evaluation) and the second round (presentation evaluation).

We developed tracking control technology based on MPC (Model Predictive Control) using high-performance PTZ cameras and illegal drone detection and identification technology based on CNN (convolutional neural network). When a bird passes by within the sky or a sudden situation occurs outside, the detection-identification-tracking process operates organically, and specifically, it received high praise for implementing anti-drone technology*.

Master’s student Jinhyuk Park, master’s graduates Junki Shim and Kwonyeol Lee, and bachelor’s student Chaehoon Song have all been conducting drone autonomous operation research in Professor Seongim Choi’s lab for greater than two years.

Student Park Jin-hyuk said, “The drone-related knowledge and experience I gained within the lab under the guidance of Professor Choi Seong-im was a terrific assist in preparing for this competition.” He added, “I plan to conduct more in-depth research on related topics and present a paper in the long run.” .

Meanwhile, the ‘1st Land, Sea, and Air Unmanned Vehicle Challenge’ hosted by the Korea Unmanned Vehicle Research Association (KRAUV) was held from June last 12 months to May this 12 months.

The awards ceremony was held in Taean on the seventeenth of last month, and the G-Stracker team received a prize of 10 million won.
